Predictions:

Ordinary Chinese investors in Evergrande will either have their housing construction contract fulfilled, possibly with a delay, or be reimbursed, likely without interest, but to the extent of their investment.

Evergrande’s financial leaders and insiders, regardless of their factional alignment, whether to Xi Jinping, Jiang Zemin, Hujin Tao, or any of the smaller regional/clan centered factions, will be held to financial accountability. They probably will not get any prison time, this is a ‘mere’ financial crime and can be rectified.

Foreign investors in Evergrande are screwed, even those who are overseas Chinese, though the overseas Chinese might be less screwed than other overseas investors.

Before you claim this is all the CCPs fault
Enron, Parmalat, Theranos, Madoff, and that’s all relatively recent, there are more examples of financial crimes which amount to ponzi schemes / frauds. This one however since it’s based in real estate is likelier to be made good since real estate does not just disappear or get eaten up. Caveat however: the CCP can and sometimes does expropriate land without compensating the owner, which is legal under Chinese law.

Conclusion: I do not expect the Evergrande financial crises to destabilize the CCP, neither from mass discontent nor even with regard to factional infighting within the CCP itself.
