Hong Kong, and Taiwan too, have long served Beijing’s interest in attracting capital and growing PRC trade. I truly hope that can remain the case. Carrie Lam’s ill-considered policies and intransigence (step down already) have more or less pushed Beijing to a precipice. If President Xi is so foolish as to walk off the edge of that cliff she is leading him out on it isn’t my fault or anything I caused.

A wise policy would offer concessions and negotiate and deescalate rather than escalate. Unfortunately to present no one seems particularly interested in being sensible. However, a political party and a government, unlike any protest movement, are highly organized, legally constitute, and enjoy legitimacy. So concessions and conciliations almost always come from the government rather than protestors.
