欠 is a picture of a mouth on top it’s wide open food isn’t going into it words aren’t coming out of it but air is coming out of it. on the bottom is a person 人. he might be yawning, singing, or laughing. That’s its literal meaning. Metaphorically it means deficient lacking: e.g. lacking sleep, lacking decorum lacking whatever caused that gaping mouth to open wide but not say words or stuff the pie hole.
