暴 bao4 violent, sudden

bao4 This character originally meant “to dry out in the sun” (apparently as part of preparation of food) and thus extended to the ideas of heat, dry, and action needed to prepare food and thus by extension that which is violent, abrupt, sudden, as in breaking of grains when threshing them or flaying the skin of a deer. If you add the fire radical to the left it still says bao but then means to explode, to burst!

The oracle bone character for 暴 looks very much like the head of a deer drying out underneath a mouth, so the idea was probably originally the drying of meat and skin of a slain animal.  

With seal script however it was simplified/standardized into: a pair of hands in the middle working together 共 beneath the sun above 日 with the grains of rice below 米
