纠结（jiū jié）STRUGGLE

Jiu1 means tied, twisted. On the left is the silk determinant since it’s usually ropes and on the right is stylized image of

two ropes twisted together. It occurs these days as a character component.

On the right is

结jie2

jie2 which means KNOT. But 结 jie2 is a polyphonic character and in the first tone means produce, solid, bear fruit.

Put together jiu1jie2 means STRUGGLE. We STRUGGLE to break the bonds of ropes tied together which bind us.
